Deer legal in my state. yes The Glock 23 is legal deer in my state. A .40 S&W shot through a minimum 4 inch barrel is considered deer medicine where I live. Add to that the ability to shoot a .40 from a carbine, and the joy increases with every extra foot-pound of energy you get with that long barrel.

Why mention that you can shoot deer around these parts with a .40 S&W? Because it is a powerful era in its own right. Its highest law enforcement may have been a few years ago, but it does not shine the pumpkin.

It's still a good man stopper and (according to my state's deer regulations) a good deer stopper as well. Many law enforcement agencies used (or used) the .40 S&W, most notably the FBI, shortly before they switched back to the 9mm. It has lost popularity, but the .40 S&W is still very effective. Let's take a quick look at the cartridge, then examine the gun.

Where did it come from? The .40 S&W began when the FBI (which adopted the 10mm cartridge) asked Smith & Wesson to downsize the 10mm. The full caliber 10mm was a real handful and so they wanted something that more agents could shoot effectively. S&W created the .40, which shortened the 10mm case to its name and made it a few downloads, and the FBI adopted it. For more complete background on the .40, read my pistol cartridge comparison.

It is quite interesting, especially if you are a fan of forty. To be honest, I have never owned a .40 pistol or carbine. I have nothing against the round - it's just that I shoot, shoot and reload 9mm and .45 ACP. I didn't see the need to go with the .40 since I have "book gangs" around that caliber on the shelf. I have often thought about getting a .40 and may do so in the future. If I do, the reload will die, and bullet mold will be next on the list.

Glock Pistols Gen3 Vs Gen4. What Is The Difference Between The Generations?

Breaking a gun that delivers 400 (or more) foot-pounds of energy accurately gives one confidence. This is true, especially if the gun was not large, easy to carry and held a dozen or more rounds in its magazine. I think part of the downfall of the .40 is that the ballistics development of the 9mm cartridge really took off. There are also some nice 9mm loads out there that deliver foot-pounds of energy like Hostess Twinkies deliver calories.

Considering you can carry more than 9mm ammo in a given space. Check out the 9mm compact pistol market leader compared to others - Glock's best-selling Model 19. This is a gun that is basically the same size as our Model 23, but the 23 I can carry two more rounds in my standard magazine, from 15 to. 13 shots.

Here, we see the same disparity when we look at full-sized Glocks in 9mm and 40, models 17 and 22. The model 17 holds 17 rounds in its standard magazine versus 15.40 rounds in the model 22.

It's not exactly groundbreaking, but for some people it makes a difference. Some people carry 5 shot frame revolvers - they don't seem to care about capacity. If you know where to place your shot, it can make up for less cartridge capacity.

Going the other way, however, it appears that the .40 S&W magazine you have in your handgun holds one or more rounds than a .45 ACP gun of the same size. Using the same magazine comparison as discussed above, the full-size Glock Model 22 in .40 holds two more rounds in its standard magazine than the full-size Glock Model 21 in .45 ACP, 15 to 13.

Being a .45 fan, this is certainly not comforting news, but (as the saying goes), it is what it is. What matters to me is that it's amazing that you can even have 13 .45 ACP rounds in your carry gun, not counting extra magazines and chambering. Capacity plays a big role in caliber selection. But the .40 is still a good choice. It's right in the middle between 9mm and .45 ACP and, as Goldilocks found, the middle might be the best place to be.

One thing you may not immediately understand about 23 is skill matching. If you buy a .357 Sig barrel for your Model 23, you now have a gun in that caliber. Your .40 caliber magazine should work, since the .357 Sig is based on the .40 case.

In the worst case, the following structure can cause a feeding problem, so you will have to choose a model 32 magazine. Another cartridge to which the 23 is easily converted is the 9mm. Buy a conversion barrel for 100 dollars or more and some Model 19 magazines and you are now in the 9mm business with what essentially becomes a Model 19 that says "23" on the slide. So, you can consider buying a starter gun and some aftermarket parts for the price of three guns.

If the ease of changing calibers isn't enough to make the 23 attractive, I don't know what is. It's a very interesting capability though - one gun, three calibers.

.40 will tell you that you are not shooting a 22. Its recoil is generally described as sharp, especially in a lighter pistol. If we remember that .40 is a descendant of 10mm, its snappiness is understandable. When you shoot a 180-grain bullet at velocities south of 1000 fps, then you're going to get some pushback relative to recoil.

You are talking right at 400 ft/lbs of energy, like some inferior .357 Magnum loads. I mentioned above how this round is diamond-legal in my state, and I think I can see why. The 10mm will do everything better than the .40 when it comes to hunting, but in terms of concealed carry and personal defense (read more about self defense insurance), I can see where the .40 has an advantage over the 10mm.

The 10mm has some really sharp recoil (at least the ones I've shot) which makes it difficult to recover in time. It tries to create a next shot in any kind of quick, timer-stopping way. I know there are some of you who regularly shoot 10mm and are perfectly fine with the recoil, but for most of us hobbyists, it's a handful.

Now we see the link between the 10mm and the .40 S&W in regression. 10 would be more, but even a .40 in a light gun will get your attention.

23 in .40 S&W can be a little too handy by itself. I shot just one load, a 180-grain FMJ cut-cone bullet from SIG Sauer at 990 fps. This is a decent training load that will help you acclimate to the way the .40 feels when you shoot it. Actual defensive ammunition would be even more energetic. And your shooting hand will learn the difference very quickly.

If you carry a .40, you owe it to yourself to carefully train yourself with different loads that are self-defense oriented. And, don't finish a magazine and then go home. The .40 needs a little more work in the practical department due to its greater recoil than the 9mm. But if you put in the time, you will have done something that not all shooters do - .40 to carry enough.

Now, please don't get the impression that I think the .40 is too much. It's just that it takes a little longer to master when you shoot it from a smaller type of pistol, like a Glock 23. However, it's worth the effort to master the gun.

This 23 seemed about right, given the small amount of shooting I did with it. I've said it before - Galaxies are better than average accurate.

The 23 is only slightly smaller than the 22, its magazine capacity is one minus-two compared to the 22. Therefore, it can be a good choice for a concealed carry gun. Its standard 13-shot capacity makes it more than adequate for most situations, and its compact design strikes a solid balance between full-size and sub-compact pistol. You have a smaller than full size gun if you carry it, but you can always use full size magazines if you want - they just stick out a little. However, it is a simple but reliable and accurate .40 small pistol option.
